Restore and care
Encourage responsible planting of native species, with ongoing care and maintenance.

Born in the Marão. Able to put down roots anywhere in the world.
A race ends. Our commitment to the mountain goes on.
Born in the heart of the Marão. Able to put down roots anywhere in the world.
Our Trees · Plantar o Marão began with a proposal from the organisers of Desafio Cumes do Marão to the Baldios de Ansiães, who welcomed it from the very beginning.
Replacing the traditional finisher medal with a tree turned a symbol of achievement into a commitment to nature and future generations.
The initiative grew from a close, lasting relationship between the Ultra Trail do Marão organisers, the Baldios de Ansiães and the mountain communities.
Ansiães is our home and the birthplace of this project.
It was here that the idea first took root, before expanding to trees planted and cared for around the world.
The Baldios de Ansiães, deeply connected to the life and stewardship of the Serra do Marão, embraced this proposal and remain central to its story.
Based there, the platform gives individual identities to trees planted in any country, recording their location, photographs and progress over the years.
A shared beginning. A commitment beyond borders.
One tree.
One identity.
One official record, managed on the Baldios de Ansiães platform.
Marão, Alvão, Aboboreira, Castelo de Matos and Meia Via are priority areas for UTM FAMILY activities.
The tree identification platform, however, has a worldwide reach: records and follow-up are not limited to these mountains.
Encourage responsible planting of native species, with ongoing care and maintenance.
Protect mountain paths, prevent damage and raise awareness among everyone who explores them.
Create opportunities for local people, runners, volunteers, families and partners to take part.
Turn the energy of every event into lasting contributions to the region.
Desafio Cumes do Marão 2026 was the pioneering event, the seed of this initiative.
The organisers' proposal was immediately welcomed by the Baldios de Ansiães, where it found its first home.
Giving finishers a tree instead of a medal made that vision a reality.
That first experience remains at the heart of our story, with a special bond between the organisations and the Marão communities.
Our ambition is to help new trees take root around the world while keeping alive the memory of where everything began.
The Baldios de Ansiães platform brings together each tree's identity, planting location, photographs and growth history, including trees planted outside Portugal.
The initiatives below are examples of participation, not geographical limits.
The starting point: linking each finisher to a native tree and extending the gesture beyond the finish line.
Awareness, school participation and hands-on learning about native woodlands.
Engaging companies and teams in restoration and long-term land care.
Working with land managers and local communities on coordinated conservation activities.
Join an activity or project, starting with Desafio Cumes do Marão.
Link your participation to an individually identified tree once the details are confirmed.
Plant the tree in a coordinated activity and record the actual planting details.
Track and update the tree’s condition, location and story over the years.
The official register is held on the Baldios de Ansiães Plantar Marão platform.
Each tree may be identified by code and followed through photographs, location and growth updates, wherever in the world it is planted.
Access the record through “My Tree”.
An idea, an hour of volunteering, knowledge of the territory or a partnership proposal can all make a difference.
UTM FAMILY is one of the spaces where everyone can get involved and share new ideas.
