The ROUTES

AMARANTE – CANADELO

It starts with a short walk through the historic area of ​​Amarante. From here, you’ll leave for the outskirts of the city, either by rural roads or by tracks, always going up. Arriving at the Monastery of Gondar, you’ll descend a beautiful trail. Crossing the Marancinho river, you’ll find either downhills or uphills, passing by the Inn and chapel of S. Bento. Halfway through the first hard climb, it goes down abruptly to the Olo river and then Canadelo.

CANADELO – PARDELHAS

Following a small river and along old paths, passing the riverside an ancient ashlar located between cliffs. After crossing a bridge further on, you take a rural path, passing through the middle of the village of Campanhó. Running along tracks that crossroads, there are some old mines, the Inca track, the Freixieiro corral, the rudimentary charm of Chão de Rosso; and after its stream it ascends to Pardelhas.

PARDELHAS – COVELO DO MONTE

Leave the comfort of Pardelas and leave immediately to discover the greatest beauties of this trail. It’s recommended that you leave the supply well-wrapped and warm. Firstly, you’ll find the magnificent valley of Chão do Rosso and Olo, trails torn through the rocks, elevating ridges and pinnacles that take you to the skies. To then enter the enchanted valley of Porto Velho. It’s easy to fall in love with the beauties you come across. Here each step taken is the certainty that the challenge makes us happier.

Arriving at the foot of Pena Suar there’s a rolling track. After the old ranger house, follow the pastoral trails that will take you to Covelo do Monte.

COVELO DO MONTE – ANSIÃES

Following pastoral trails where, in times past, ox carts tore flagstones. In Ribeira do Covelo you’ll come across the hard climb to Gavião. Enjoy the panoramic view and descend until you enter the magical Lameira forest. Proceed to the chapel of Senhora da Moreira and then rush down the oldest path to Ansiães, nicknamed Heart of Marão.

ANSIÃES – SOUTELO

Starting first on a rural path, quickly you’ll find a tremendous wall to Alto das Veias and then Portal da Freita. The appetizer is done, a kind of KM Vertical. Caution is required. These two ridges when faced with winter weather are fearful. It’s a storm.

Take shelter as you lower the altitude, embracing a wonderful birch trees grove. And then you’ll find the village of Montes, Cotorinho and after the exuberante river of Moinhos we’ve arrived to Soutelo.

SOUTELO – MAFÓMEDES

Up next is the the mythical climb up the KMV Marão. All that’s left now are 3 kms with almost 800m of positive slope. Until you reach the Marão summit and the “Senhora da Serra”, the views through “O Reino Maravilhoso” are sublime. Take in the view and enjoy it.

Atferwards, there’s the long descent until the the village of Mafómedes. The view throughout the path is astounding and fills your soul with joy: cumeeira da Fraga de Erminde, Encosta das Lajes and Seixinhos. As far as your eye can see!

Mafómedes is the most isolated mountain town in Marão.

MAFÓMEDES – TRAVANCA DO MONTE

Once again you will gain altitude throughout herding trails and after reaching the base, you will precipitate down through a lush forest to the village of Póvoa.
Take a path past the Penedo Longo.
Arriving at the plateau of Corvachã, wander through the rock's edges, precipitating down a single track until the Carneiro River. Taking the final climb of this stretch, nature toasts with lush vegetation. Pardinhas is admirably set in this magical setting, and the water from its springs is the much desired gift that fulfills, recovers and forces you until it reaches Travanca do Monte. Here one lives and breathes silence and peace and finds the fullness of the senses.

TRAVANCA DO MONTE – GOUVEIA (S. SIMÃO)

Travanca, the refuge of Teixeira de Pascoaes, is still loved by writers and other art workers. Its charm awakens our senses to what is the largest megalithic necropolis in northern Portugal. The mysticism of the Serra of Aboboreira and the traces found there are the perfect harmony for meeting our ancestors, from thousands of years ago. This meeting ends as soon as you reach Aldeia Velha. The already more bucolic scenario is quickly invaded by an exuberant succession of magnificent waterfalls that run along the Goiva Stream. And you get to the picnic park of S. Simão de Gouveia.
And surrounded by successive waterfalls, right after the supply.

GOUVEIA (S. SIMÃO) – AMARANTE

Going down until the Ovelha River. Take a small climb by an abandoned place. In Salvador do Monte, after crossing the village, follow a short descent to the Tâmega River. Walk for two kilometers along the river through a forest path until you reach Amarante.
